The XVI Summit of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Forum 2008 will take place from 17th to 23rd November in different cities of Peru. The representatives of the 21 member economies of the framework will discuss significant aspects for the development of the Asia-Pacific region at the leader's summit to be held on the 22nd and 23rd November.
'A new commitment to the Asia-Pacific Development' will be the central theme of this year’s meeting and would consider:
-
Broaden the participation of other players in the process of building the Asia-Pacific community, promoting the association among the public and private sectors (PPP), the inclusion of the representatives of civil society and the cooperation of the international financial institutions (IFI).
-
Strengthen the focus on personal and economic development, to include an integral approach to the major issues that affect the region, such as energy security, personal security, climate change and sustainable economic growth.
As the host country, Peru will gain a greater entry into the Asia Pacific, which is the world’s most dynamic and powerful economic block, creating opportunities for trade, investment and business and also promoting receptive tourism and bilateral agreements.
Peru is the only Andean Community member country that is part of the APEC Forum. This position provides it with the advantage of acting as a valid intermediary to promote and develop a rapprochement that would be beneficial to both regions.
The Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation Council is a cooperation mechanism created in Canberra in November 1989 as an initiative by Australia, Japan and Korea in response to the growth in trade between Pacific Basin economies. Peru has been a full member of the APEC from November 1998.
